Medical Services

Our staff provides dedicated and skilled care in all aspects of eye health. Here you will find details describing the various services we perform at our office and at regional hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers.

Routine Ophthalmologic Care:

Consultation and examination are at the core of our comprehensive care approach. We offer state-of-the-art diagnostic technologies, such as the Optomap retinal exam and Ocular Coherence Tomography, to detect conditions and diseases as early as possible. When treatment is necessary, be it for an acute or degenerative issue, our staff has the experience and tools needed to maximize our patients' eye health and wellness.

Refractive Surgery:

LASIK - Laser In Situ Keratomileusis is the most popular refractive surgery for helping people lessen their dependence on glasses and contact lenses. A short, painless procedure, LASIK entails the use of a laser to reshape the layers of the cornea. Positioning the laser requires that a thin flap of the outer cornea be folded away; after correction, the flap is unfolded, creating a self-sealing closure without the need for stitches. Most patients experience rapid, painless recovery, and can resume normal activity in very short order.

PRK - Photo-Refractive Keratectomy is a corrective procedure wherein a laser is used to sculpt the surface of the eye. It is often selected to maintain the strength and integrity of the corneal dome. With the ability to make extremely precise structural modifications, PRK allows highly accurate refractive corrections with minimal trauma to the eye.

Glaucoma Surgery:

For some patients, medication alone is not sufficient to control intraocular pressure. In such circumstances, it is often necessary to perform laser or conventional surgery, to allow excess fluid to drain from the eye. Laser treatment stimulates the eye's trabecular meshwork in an attempt to unblock the natural drainage system. Conventional treatment involves the creation of a hole through which aqueous fluid can flow to relieve abnormal pressure.

Cataract Surgery:

Cataracts are treated with an advanced surgical technique known as phacoemulsification. Dr. Zangari provides state of the art cataract surgery under topical anesthesia. This bloodless, painless procedure is performed in a matter of minutes using a state-of-the-art ultrasonic probe inserted through a small incision at the edge of the cornea. The cloudy lens is broken up into tiny fragments and suctioned out of the eye, after which an artificial intraocular lens is implanted via a special injector. Typically, the incision is self-sealing and no stitches are required.

Strabismus Surgery:

When patches, glasses or other medical treatments fail to correct ocular misalignment, corrective surgery may be necessary. Surgery involves recessions and/or resections of eye muscles, depending on whether, respectively, a weakening or strengthening of the muscular structures is required. By modifying the tension and attachment points of the eye muscles, the eyes can be brought into very close alignment, alleviating functional and cosmetic concerns.

Diabetic Retinopathy Surgery:

Diabetic Retinopathy is an extremely serious condition which can result in blindness if not properly detected and treated, and patients diagnosed with diabetes should seek ophthalmologic care. Various forms of Laser Photocoagulation may be necessary to treat certain conditions related to the retina and/or macula. Laser treatments are typically done on an outpatient basis, and may involve several sessions.
